Schmit (Fan Review)

I was at the Bangkok gig on the 15th Oct.Can't say the show was great or not great!They were still the "Eagles"!The "oohs and aahs" rang thru the whole night with perfection.2 things left me a little disappointed.1)Tim's bass sound was rather light during the show,(musician's point of view).2)In response to Paul Dorsey's statement that,"Stuart Smith - the Don Felder "clone" might as well join the band officially is totally uncalled for!!!Stuart's licks were note to note with all the Eagles' songs,,,but man,,,there ain't no feel at all.Even the guitar sound is not an Eagles sound.If you listen hard enough,Felder's licks and solos are mesmerisingly weepy and melancholic while sounding technical enough.Stuart Smith definitely did not live up to Felder's expertise or feel.No wonder why, he's not an official member of the Eagles ,or will never be.I guess Don,Glenn,Tim,Joe,and especially Felder will agree with this.

Nevertheless,"The Eagles " were loved for whom they are!

If you listen to Last road out of Eden you will know why he's there!! He can write songs, the stuff on this Album is as good if not better than Hotel California. This is like listening to a Beatles album there is stuff from everywhere Tom Petty, Neil Young, Steely Dan, Sting Motown,riff after riff on it, not to mention Joe is Joe, if Don and Glenn weren't chaneling John and Paul on Waiting in the Weeds and Center of the Universe, I'm a drunk, 30 years to the date of HC, a double Album, top 50 albums all time. Yeah it took them 25 years but at least they had something to say.

Gotta say that I agree... Smith's playing is not nearly as good as Felder. Stuart is good, don't get me wrong. But Felder is Felder. He and Walsh were the original masters of Hotel California. One problem with Smith not being able to achieve that ideal sound is that he's playing Fender, which is what Walsh is playing. Felder played Gibsons. And most of you know that Gibsons have that down N dirty gritty sound, where Fenders are more of a whinny, thinner sound. The awesome playing of Felder and Walsh... along with the perfect belnd of Gibson and Telecaster gave us the sound we all remember. But the bottom line is still that Stuart is nowhere near as good overall as Felder.

Unfair comments on smith's playing ability. I've played lead and rhythm for over 25 years for all types of bands.Everyone develops their own style of play with experience. you are used to felder's slow smooth style and thats great, but smith has his own sound, i think it sounds good enough to me. the eagles must have also thought so too,they hired him for the whole tour. Enough said.
